Derek Evans Photographer And Hereford Fan

Hereford FC football fans, social historians and lovers of photography still have the chance to see some epic Hereford Utd pictures as a photographic exhibition charting Herefordshire life from the 1950s to the 1970s tours the county.

These evocative black and white images are being exhibited as part of 'Herefordshire Life Through a Lens’, an ambitious 4-year community heritage and media project inspired by the photographic archive of the Hereford-based Derek Evans Studio (1950-1980s).

Evans took many thousands of fantastic photographs celebrating many aspects of Herefordshire life, Hereford Utd Football Club, to hop picking, and the May Fair, all captured in exquisite detail and with great atmosphere.

Many fans may remember him: he was a passionate Hereford fan and was often seen very close to the action on the pitch side – too close according to some. Getting THE shot was important to Derek who sold his work nationally and internationally.

Derek’s photos of the Hereford team celebrating in the changing room after the ‘giant killers’ match against Newcastle Utd, capture the heady atmosphere perfectly.

Perhaps you were there, or maybe you recognize yourself or someone in the photos?

The project aims to record 100+ first-hand stories: uncovering nostalgic tales of surrounding Hereford Utd, team and fans, and its moments of glory.

Already we have been fortunate to film an interview with local hero Colin Addison, who remembers the team having lunch in the Green Dragon before strolling through the city for the big match. Club historian and archivist Ron Parrott is a third generation Hereford football fan. He was also happy to sit in front of the camera and talked passionately about the highs and the lows of Hereford. Patricia Morrow remembers the special trains that used to bring fans into the city, even, on at least once occasion, a special disco carriage.

These are just a few stories of Hereford football’s past and we would love to hear more from you, the fans.

Derek also took hundreds of photos of hop-picking; the Mayfair's risqué past; stroll down memory lane with Fownhope’s Heart of Oak annual walk and other rural traditions. His collection illustrates all the colour and wonder of Hereford’s recent social history.
