Bulls Advent Calendar - No.16

Number sixteen on the Bulls Advent Calendar is Edgar Street.

1950/51
The home of Hereford United since 1924, the club has never owned the site and - on more than one occasion - haven't even held a lease.

The Bulls weren't even in existence when the ground was sold by the Bulmer family to the "Hereford Athletic Ground Co." for £3,000 in 1920. Three separate football clubs - Hereford City, Thistle, and Town - all operated out of the site, along with the athletics club.

1965/66
Paying a rent equivalent to £4,200 in today's money, Hereford United were formed in 1924 as one of two sides to continue using the ground. Within five years the Bulls were struggling to pay the rent, so it was reduced to a little over £700.

In 1931 the Council bought the ground for £3,000 (£173,000) and leased it to the Bulls - now the sole tenants - for the equivalent of £7,000 a year. This was again a problem for the club, and it reduced to £5,000 by the end of the decade.

1972/73
From 1952 to 1966 the club paid just £1 a year 'peppercorn' rent.
