Stan Machent 1924-2012

News has reached club historian Ron Parrott that former Bulls forward Stan Machent has died aged 88.

Inside-right Stan started his career with local amateur side Chesterfield Ramblers, progressing to Chesterfield FC, still as an amateur before signing for Sheffield United in October 1938. He was at Bramall Lane at the same time as Charlie Thompson but couldn’t break into the first team and went out on loan to Buxton the following season before war interrupted his career.

During hostilities Stan turned out for Chesterfield and as a guest player for Bath City and Distillery in Ireland but after the war he moved back to Chesterfield in a part-exchange deal but a broken arm didn’t help his chances and he rejoined Buxton in the close season of 1949.

Stan remained with the Cheshire League side for another two seasons and scored a remarkable 26 goals in only 19 league games last season before signing for United in July 1951.

Competition for places was fierce and Stan spent most of his time in the Reserves, making only two first-team appearances in his one season at Edgar Street. He spent three more seasons back with Buxton before ending his career and taking up a coaching post with Chesterfield.
