Hythe Captain Feels Like They've Won The Cup

Hythe captain Dave Cook has told Kentish Football that his teammates feel like they've won the FA Cup after making the First Round.

The Kent League side had a brief taste of success in the late 1980's after property developer Tony Walton spent heavily on the side. But he suddenly withdrew support and folded the club in 1992, shortly after an FA Vase semi-final appearance, and they had to start from scratch in the amateur leagues with their Reachfields Stadium the only reminder of Walton's involvement.

Cook, a bricklayer by trade, was asked if they could win at Edgar Street:

"Well, they're rock bottom aren’t they? Hopefully, all the managers are saying it’s winnable so we’ll have to wait and see. I don’t want to count my chickens yet. You want to play as high as we can, but we have to see how we go to be honest. It’s going to be like a dream come true playing in the FA Cup. Hopefully we can get a big support down there and hopefully we can progress... Getting this far, it feels like we’ve won the FA Cup.”

Also in their ranks is veteran defender Lee Shearer. He faced the Bulls for the likes of Gravesend, Margate, and Dover during the Conference years: "This is what the FA Cup is all about. It’s a one-off game, that’s why it’s so special. It’s the FA Cup, it’s the best competition in the world and we’re in the First Round!”
