Millwall's chairman, John Berylson, has come out in support of a salary cap. Citing differences in the level of spending by League One clubs last season, he argues that at present it's not a level enough playing field.
"My view is that there should be a maximum and a minimum for each league to start with and then we can work on reducing the gap," said Berylson as reported by the London Evening Standard.
"In League One, we have Southampton's payroll of £8-9million, Leeds' £7.5m, while Colchester and Huddersfield are way up there.
"Wycombe maybe have a payroll of £1.1m. Last year, Hereford were not even £1m. How do you expect them to compete with a team spending £10m? How can that be fair?
"I know Leeds and Nottingham Forest will get twice the number of fans but that doesn't mean they should be allowed to outspend them by 10 times.
"You have got to ensure that teams cannot make such tremendous losses with such gambles. Portsmouth will get relegated, may take administration - but what happens if no one comes to save them? The reality of being down and out and disbanded really exists. It's the first time I fear that a team will cease to exist."
